It is easy to save our thankfulness for the big things — the answered prayer, the good report, the door that finally opens. But most of life is not made of headlines. It is made of ordinary mornings, shared meals, familiar voices, and small kindnesses we barely notice. Gratitude is the practice of noticing that God is present in all of it.
Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 5:18
Thankfulness Is a Way of Seeing
Gratitude does not pretend that everything is easy. It simply refuses to overlook the good that is genuinely there. The warmth of a cup of coffee, a friend who checked in, a body that carried you through the day — these are not accidents. They are quiet evidences of a God who loves to give good gifts.
Small Mercies Add Up
When we begin counting the small mercies, something shifts. The heart that practices thanks becomes harder to discourage, because it has trained itself to look for grace before it looks for lack. Try naming three ordinary things tonight that went right. You may be surprised how full the list becomes.
Gratitude Draws Us Closer
Every time we say thank you to God, we remember that we are not self-made and never were. Gratitude keeps us humble and keeps us close. It turns our attention away from what we are missing and back toward the One who has been faithfully providing all along.
A Prayer of Thanks
Lord, thank You for the ordinary gifts I so easily overlook. Open my eyes to see Your hand in the small moments of today. Make my heart quick to notice and quick to say thank You, and let that gratitude draw me nearer to You. Amen.
